Don cautions against African identity loss

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Prof Olumuyiwa Popoola, has described the rise of Artificial Intelligence as a promising instrument for revitalising endangered African languages.

However, he cautioned that efforts are essential to safeguard against the erosion of the essence of African cultural identities.

Popoola said this in a lecture he delivered at the 2024 National Conference of the Yoruba Studies Association of Nigeria, which was held at Lagos State University, Ojo, on Tuesday.

Popoola observed that the roots of AI in Africa dated back to practices predating its modern emergence through computer applications.

He referenced the traditional use of scarecrows or mannequins clad in tattered clothing and positioned in fields to deter birds from feasting on growing crops.

Additionally, he spoke of the Osanyin medium of communication, describing it as a tool employed to unveil the secrets of humanity.

He said at the inception of AI conceptualisation in Europe and America, it suffered several setbacks because of concerns about its negative effects on human intelligence and natural behaviors.

However, he noted that research was revived in 1997, leading to the remarkable achievement of the first computer that defeated a grandmaster in a chess game.

The professor of communication and media studies said that this event marked a moment for AI’s integration into human life.

According to him, it also faced challenges rooted in religious and cultural narratives, reiterating the call that Africans must remain vigilant regarding the potential adverse effects of this technology on the erosion of cultural identity.

He said, “The invention of AI makes humans wonder whether machines will eventually replace human activities or create inefficiency, redundancy, and joblessness. Historically, AI started in the 1950s with the innovative research of Alan Turing aimed at determining whether machines could simulate.

“The role of AI in the 21st century cannot be overemphasised because machine learning is taking over the human role in solving problems in various spheres of human endeavor due to the presence of powerful computer hardware.

“The advantages of AI include a provision of assistance to human beings, advancement in technology, and development of better human safety and peace, among others.

“As we conclude our journey through the nexus of Artificial Intelligence and our rich tapestry of African languages and cultural studies, we have uncovered a landscape of both promise and challenge.

“Yet, it is essential to remember that technology, while a tool of immense potential, reflects the values and intentions of those who wield it. Our task is to harness AI not just to advance but to ensure that it amplifies and preserves the essence of our cultural identities.”
