FRSC pledges to reduce crashes in Anambra

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra State has restated its commitment towards reducing road crashes through increased visibility and strict monitoring in the state.

The Sector Commander, Joyce Alexander, stated this during a press briefing in Awka, on Thursday.

Alexander said the exercise was to ensure total compliance with traffic rules and safer roads.

She emphasised the need for continuous awareness and seamless enforcement of road safety to achieve the policy thrust of the new Corps Marshall in achieving zero tolerance for road crashes.

She said, “I want to put FRSC on a central map in Anambra. I will create an impact so that the Anambra people will begin to enjoy the benefits of FRSC, including reduced crashes and disobedience to traffic rules.

“We are going to achieve more visibility by posting personnel across the state and installing road signs. Even though we are not recruiting, we will rejig operations and the evidence will be seen and felt by all.

“The policy thrust of the new Corps Marshall is to rejig operations, reassess and reevaluate them for better performance and that is exactly what I came to do in Anambra.

“While I work with road users, I will also be working with the state government and other agencies for better and improved service delivery. Even as we are working on smooth roads, we will equally work on over-speeding.

“Smooth roads go with speed calming measures and one of them is United Nations approved bumps, not those that look like culverts but those electronically guided.”

She added that beyond the awareness of speed-limiting devices, transporters have been made to fix the devices on their vehicles.

“Some transporters have not been complying with the speed limiting devices. But with the new thrust policy, we will start arresting defaulters and if we do, we will not just allow you to pay the fine and go with your vehicles. We will insist you install the device before we release your vehicle.

“The media are critical stakeholders in road safety management, therefore, we called for more collaboration for easy and seamless enforcement.

“Without public education and enlightenment, enforcement would be difficult. That is why we need you as major critical stakeholders in our day-to-day operations,” she added.
